CUSD SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM VISION STATEMENT

The School Counseling Program strives to provide opportunities so that every student will acquire the social-emotional, academic, and career skills to reach their fullest educational potential and successfully manage their lives as healthy, responsible, competent and productive citizens who respect themselves and others.

CUSD SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Capistrano Unified School District School Counselors is to provide a comprehensive counseling program that supports the whole child. School Counselors will focus on the needs, interests, and issues related to social-emotional, academic, and college/career development of all students through a multi-tiered system of support. School Counselors will advocate, collaborate and facilitate actions that promote a positive school climate, provide an opportunity for all students to access their education and achieve personal and academic success to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

WHAT DOES A SCHOOL COUNSELOR DO?

We Teach: We teach lessons to all students. They learn social skills so they can handle peer conflict and bullying. They learn how to identify their own emotions and develop useful coping strategies so they can handle difficult situations. They learn to respect the experiences, beliefs, and values of others while standing tall in their own.

We Train: We train all students in study skills such as goal-setting, time management, organization, persistence, and using their day planner (reminder binder); skills they will need throughout their education and career.

If you are seeking Mental Health Treatment: We are not clinical counselors (LPCC) or a therapists (MFT), and as such we are not licensed to provide treatment or long-term assistance. We can, however, provide several referrals to licensed and trained mental health providers in the area.
For more information about the Middle School Counselor's role, please view the , which is published by the American School Counselor Association.

Conversations with students are confidential unless: somebody is hurting them, they want to hurt themselves, they want to hurt somebody else, or they ask me to share information on their behalf.

If you or someone you know are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (800-273-8255), dial 911, or go to the nearest emergency room for immediate assistance.
